Canadian Ear Candy – Emma Lee

Emma Lee

Backseat Heroine
eOne Music Canada

Every once in a while, I am lucky enough to receive a little piece of ear candy in the mail. It is an eclectic mix of music, truly a surprise each time I open the package. I still buy my music the old fashion way CDs, albums and in a rare moment 8 tracks. It’s the colourful signature of the inspired cover art, the intimate notes of thanks inside the CD liner and the photographic essay displaying the lyrics, each piece of the artist’s creativity is shown as a whole and makes the musical experience more authentic to me the listener.

The bright burnt orange of the CD cover caught my attention first. With a self portrait of sorts, surrounded by poignant artifacts from Emma Lee’s life: a butterfly; black cat; purple mountains in the distance and wild prairie flowers encircle her likeness. Her album Backseat Heroine quickly when to high rotation in our home.

Emma’s soulful sound reminds of the early Blue Rodeo days, mixed with solo Cheryl Crow ballads. Lovely listening. Emma writes most of her own music with a plethora of accompanying musical instruments including: guitar, piano, trumpet, organ and cello. She is obviously talented in many areas including song writing, photography and vocals.  Emma brings to the table many talents wrapped up in one artistic package, a truly undiscovered Canadian talent.

The first song ‘Not Coming By’ quickly became a favourite of my middle daughter Andie, who memorized the words during a long car ride to Toronto. The lyrics are tucked away in a mini album accompanied by Emma Lee’s photographic art, which gave an organic look inside another of her her talents, photography.

In my collection of Canadiana music, this is an excellent addition. I look forward to her next album and for the opportunity to see her perform live. Thank you to eOne Music and Eric Alper for the chance to sample this rising Canadian star. ***Disclaimer –  all opinions are my own, I received the CD to review.
