Nighttime wetting is a common problem many school aged children face. Up to 15% of five-year-olds (Junior & Senior Kindergartens) and 8% of 8-year-olds (Grade 2 & 3 ) experience nighttime wetting. Boys experience nighttime wetting more often than girls. If parents experienced nighttime wetting as a child, then their child is 77% more likely to have the same experience.
When parents, friends and colleagues ask for my advice, I give several simple pieces of advice from a parent & educator’s perspective:
- Be supportive and find ways to talk about nighttime wetting to eliminate the secrecy. I suggest making relevant real life connections to make it seem like it is a common issue for children.
- Remind your child to hydrate during the day, and limit liquids closer to bedtime.
- Create a routine including simple tasks like brushing teeth, toilet use, hair brushing, story time and snuggles that foster healthy habits and decrease the need to hold urine overnight.
- Keep your child comfortable during the night. Use absorbent products to help children sleep easy and star dry such as GoodNites TRU-FIT Underwear, GoodNites Bed Mats or GoodNites Bedtime Pants.
One of the most important pieces of advice it to tell parents to relax and not make sure their child knows this is not a problem they have to face by themselves.
During the summer months we open our family cottage to friends, family and neighbours. We ensure there are warm fuzzy blankets, stuffies and a night light. One other essential item we keep in stock at the cottage, to help keep our younger cottage guests comfortable in the bunkie, are the GoodNites Bed Mats. The mats cover a large area of the bunkie beds and help ensure that any liquid that may be omitted during the night is absorbed quickly. In the morning the young cottage guests wake up ready to take on the lake. The same can be said about young students. By ensuring their nighttime comfort, parents can help make their littles ones are ready to take on the school day. Having a good night sleep is essential to helping students be successful at school. By helping your child wake up dry and comfortable you are helping them be ready to learn and lessen the stress of heading back to school.
Good luck to everyone & your back to school adventures. If you are looking for GoodNites products you can find money saving coupons here.
