Our First Homemade Cake – More Chocolate!

Confession time, I usually made my cakes from a box..gasp!  I have never actually made one from scratch, sad but true. Cookies, muffins, bread, cheesecake, brownies, fudge I have made from scratch, but the time had come to bake my first cake.

Attending #FBC2013 was a unique experience, it changed how I look at food, create dishes and my blog style. This is not a sponsored post, however I do need to thank several companies for making this #GuthrieFamilyAdventure possible. I won a Redpath “Random Acts of Sweetness”” basket. Inside the prize pack were kid friendly kitchen tools as seen in this video and of course sugar for this recipe. As well, I have to thank Burnbrae Farms for educating my family and I about the biology behind eggs. Burnbrae Farms, also stressed the importance of supporting local farmers when buying eggs and the environmental impact of good food choices.

The kids and I decided, while we were shopping, that we needed the Prestige Club Pack because we needed to bake more cookies. Excellent reasoning if you ask me!

The ingredients are simple: cake flour, sugar, eggs, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking power, milk and a little elbow grease. Now, when the kids were not looking I ground a 1/2 cup of flax seed and added it to the mix. With three picky eaters, I can tell  you I was nervous but no one noticed.
Thirty five minutes later, we had a very yummy & somewhat healthy cake It might have been my first but it will not be my last. This was another successful first #foodie adventure for my family and I. The girls have already asked for homemade cake for their birthdays however, Beckett wants a Monster’s Inc Mike cake. I guess cake decorating might be my next adventure.
This is me when he told me;)
