This weekend I am running in the Ottawa Race Weekend as an ambassador for the Ottawa Network for Education – School Breakfast Programs.
As an educator, parent and coach, I know firsthand the positive impacts daily nutritious breakfasts have for learning, attendance, behavior and self-esteem. My charity currently provides 13,500 Ottawa children in 175 schools a healthy breakfast each morning.
“The Ottawa School Breakfast Program is a wonderful partnership where schools, volunteers, community organizations and businesses come together to make the nutritional needs of children and youth a priority.School boards continue to identify more children and youth in-need each year.
In 1990, the program supported 1,000 students in 25 schools. Twenty-five years later over 13,500 students in 175 schools benefit from the support of the Ottawa School Breakfast Program. That is over 2 million breakfasts every year!
The Ottawa School Breakfast Program is open to all children and youth enrolled in one of the 175 participating schools. Students may be identified through school staff or parents. The philosophy of the program is that no child/youth is turned away. The program supports all four Ottawa school boards: Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est, Conseil des écoles publiques de l’Est de L’Ontario, Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, Ottawa Catholic School Board.”
Each morning, my children leave our home with their bellies filled and lunch boxes packed. This is not always the case for all students in our schools. Our breakfast program has a dedicated, safe place where children who missed breakfast or didn’t have enough breakfast can come to eat. Our breakfast program is the first step in ensuring our students begin the day with the best start possible for learning.
When students have a good start to the day learning can happen. It is easier for students to focus on the activity & less time is spent clock watching until the next nutrition break. I have witnessed the positive power of a healthy breakfast and I would love if you helped me reach my goal of $300. for ONFE.

I will be live tweeting all weekend long using the #runScotia hashtag. I am looking forward to seeing all of the participants and cheering sections this weekend.
